Example text

The director has heard it, in rehearsal or editing, a hundred times. Therefore, many modern productions are marvels of mumbling. Frequently major dialogue points are missed because the audience had only one chance to hear it, and the lines were not clear. As a director, remind yourself to listen with a fresh ear to be sure the material is coming across the first time someone hears it. Stage Listening Playgoers often complain they didn’t hear certain scenes or lines. They assume it was just mumbled dialogue.

Then you will be prepared to communicate it effectively to the actors, designers, and others involved in the production. You already know that at least one third of the time spent on a project should be spent in preparation before you ever see an actor, a rehearsal hall, or a studio. This is part of your homework. That means you do it at home, before you come to the workplace, not as you are trying to get the second phase of the process done. Doing your homework requires writing it down. That way, you won’t forget it, and the important ideas won’t get lost.

Also, most of us look down at our TV (and look down on the medium of TV metaphorically without realizing why). Depending on the size of your screen, the images you see will vary greatly. The more you pay to see a stage play, the more likely you are to pay close attention. Paying a hundred dollars or more for a seat is a real attention-getting device. But that also means the expectations of the audience are greater. They have gone to a lot more trouble to see this play than that film. So as the director, you have to make it worth the added time and money.
