Skinlab opened the show and did a good job of warming up the audience but wasn’t anything spectacular. Clearly this student was writing for a peer group and should not be faulted for his assumption that he need not define his terms. Still, there is a basic problem of emphasis here. The group Slayer was the headliner, and was proclaimed the greatest metal band of all time. Yet the reviewer spent but one paragraph out of nine on this most important offering, and mentioned only one song by name. Hatebreed was dealt with in four paragraphs, and Arch Enemy merited three.
This again flies in the face of popular misconception. Colleagues in the newsroom will invariably say “I love it when you blast someone,” and it is certainly true that the invective-laden criticism attracts far more interest and attention than the generally favorable report. But any reviewer would rather write good things than bad things, and would rather see good things than bad things. And who would not enjoy spending time in the company of artists, actors, musicians, directors, producers, personalities?
He makes no attempt to win our sympathy; yet, somehow, he does. More importantly he generates a ton of laughs. Willie Soke may not be anyone’s idea of a Santa Claus, but he comes bearing gifts, nonetheless. There are a number of commendable things in this veteran writer’s review. First, the tone of the review nicely matches that of the movie. You wouldn’t be this flippant with a Lord of the Rings episode. Next, the first name mentioned is the star; it is clearly his movie. Next to be named is the director, suggesting that he is responsible for the success of the film, then come the producers.
