Only a fixed number of frequencies are available for a particular group of applications, and they are called channels. The switch from one channel to another is called a frequency hop. In a frequency hopping system, the available channel bandwidth is subdivided into a large number of contiguous frequency slots. In any signaling interval, the transmitted signal occupies one of the available frequency slots. Selecting the frequency slots during each signaling interval is made pseudorandomly. Due to the random nature of frequency slot selection, the chances of two similar devices operating at the same slot are reduced.

This varies the strength of the signal reflected from the tag, creating a pattern that is detected at the interrogator as data. This technique is referred to as modulated backscatter. Before the backscattered signal arrives at the interrogator antenna, it goes through forward and backward path loss, many types of interferences in both the directions, and absorption by the tag to power it. The reflected signal also travels into the antenna connection of the interrogator in the reverse direction from the original signal.

You can increase this distance by employing a higher gain interrogator antenna, increasing the tag antenna effective area, reducing the power requirements of the tag IC, or some combination of these solutions. Typical range for this type of tag is about 15 to 16 feet (4 to 5 meters) when used with a 6 dB gain interrogator antenna.
