An der Hemisphäre unterschied er einen dorsalen, dünnwandigen Teil, das "Episphaerium" und einen basalen kompakten Teil, das "Hyposphaerium", das aus Riechhirn, Corpus striatum und Septum besteht (EDINGER, 1905). Mit der Unterscheidung "alter" Hirnteile, die sich während der Phylogenese früh entwickelt haben, und "neuer" Hirnteile, die sich erst spät entwickelt haben, stellte EDINGER die prinzipiellen Gesichtspunkte heraus, die auch heute noch bei der Gliederung des Gehirns von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung sind. Es schmälert das Ver­ dienst EDINGERS nicht, wenn manche seiner Ansichten durch spätere Forschungsergeb­ nisse abgeändert oder abgelöst wurden. Für die früh und spät entwickelten Regionen des Endhirnes führte ELLIOT SMITH (1901) die Bezeichnungen "Archipallium" und "Neopallium" ein. Die Adsorption fand über hydrophobe Wechselwirkungen zwischen den Antikörpern und dem Gelmaterial statt. Fünfzehn Patienten mit schwerer Myasthenia gravis und drei Patienten mit chonischer Polyneuritis wurden in vivo mit dem Immunadsorptionsverfahren behandelt, wobei die Patienten ihr eigenes, an pathogenen Substanzen verarmtes Plasma zurückerhielten. Die klinischen Erfolge waren durchweg intestine und erwiesen sich bei fünf cross-over Vergleichen als gleichwertig mit Plasmaaustauschbehandlungen.
