Extra info for Camper's Guide to Northern California. Parks, Lakes, Forests, and Beaches
See “Resources,” page 178. Selected information on camping that is basic to state parks in general is cited here rather than repeated for each park: Each park offers its own unique opportunities for fun and adventure, including spending quality time with one another. Camping is allowed only in designated campsites. Family campsites will accommodate up to 8 persons and 2 licensed vehicles, including trailers. Campsites for groups are available at 54 state parks. Over 40 of them can be reserved through the State Park Reservation System (see page 11).
Even the agency handling the reservations can change so only basic information is given here. Each reservation system charges a fee for the reservation, as well as a cancellation fee. Because these are subject to change, the current fees are not given. As a campground user, the best procedure, each year, is to obtain an up-to-date copy of each brochure (state parks, national parks, national forests) describing the reservation procedure and containing the camping reservation application. The brochure also serves as a valuable source of information on facilities available.
Individual family units are for use by one family or a party with a maximum of 6 people. Multiple family units are for use by 2 families or a party with a maximum of 12 people camping together. Most developed campgrounds have piped drinking water and provide toilet facilities of some type—either flush, vault, pit, or chemical. Undeveloped campgrounds have very few facilities and many do not have piped drinking water. The water supply is often from a spring, stream, river, or lake. It is recommended that water from such sources be treated by boiling it for 5 minutes.
