They are understood to exist in components that use the steam and where required to isolate systems for maintenance. The simplest steam and water cycle exists in a low-pressure heating system. Water is pumped into the boiler, is heated to saturation temperature, then converted to steam.

Some of you are going to wonder about my sanity in making such a simple statement but I’ve run into boiler operators that couldn’t accept the concept that the water going in leaves as steam. Steam is water in the form of gas. It’s the same H2O molecules which have absorbed so much energy, heated up, that they’re bouncing around so frantically that they now look like a gas. The form of the water changes as heat is added, it gets hotter until it reaches saturation temperature. Then it converts to steam with no change in temperature and finally superheats.

We can be just like Newton, sitting under the apple tree and being convinced, by an apple dropping, that there’s such a thing as gravity and we can use it to do some work for us. You can see how it works, then relate it to what’s happening in the boiler plant. Many natural functions occur in the boiler plant 17 and by observing nature we can get a better understanding of what’s going on. Steam is generated and condensed by nature, we experience it by rain falling and noticing the puddles disappear when it’s dry.
