I remember the old-fashioned Danish wooden planes there, which were rather awkward but had fairly good cutting properties. And I recall a book in the office about old Norwegian tools-a quaint history of the plane. It was about excavations that had turned up the tools with which the Oseberg Viking ship was made hundreds of years ago. Then, too, our teacher used to tell us about the old-timers and how they made their own tools, planes among them, and I began to think of the plane as being the cabinetmaker's violin; the instrument that sets the tone of the music in an orchestra.
